Mitchell Point

2.5 miles
1300 feet elevation gain

A joyous little viewpoint with a tough short climb to the top.

Mitchell Point is a unmissable rock spine/jut out from the walls of the gorge. You drive right next to it, even before I knew what it was called I knew what it looked like.

I did not dress appropriately for this hike. Poison Oak is abundant here according to numerous sources, so I wore jeans and long sleeves. That was a mistake. This hike is too steep for jeans. It wasn't a hot day, but the hike isn't easy.

You start and you just go up. The very beginning is really tough, and the trail has a lot of loose rocks. But you just go up and up, switchback after switchback along talus slopes and slight forest. But it's not a long hike, so if I had been dressed better, I probably would have been okay. You get some great views on the way up the slope, then you go into the back under the powerlines into the brush and then you make the final turn and see the top ahead. Once you reach the top, everything is worth it.

The beautiful Columbia River

It was a great little hike. Nice short, reasonable out and back, just prepare for an uphill and poison oak.
